MESSAGE FROM CARE WORKER:

My name is Marian Schembri, I started working at Dar il-Kaptan since November 2008 as a part-time care worker.  I was given the opportunity to work on full time basis as from May 2010. During this time, apart from my training as a Care Worker, I had been given the opportunity to complete courses such as First Aid, Food Handling and Care for Disabled people.

My role as a Care Worker, consists of providing personal care and support to clients with a wide range of needs, such as illneses and disabilities. I learnt to understand and support the clients’ needs and to undertake the tasks that make part of the client’s care. We work in partners during each shift so to assist each other.

My usual day consists of starting my shift by attending for the handover from the previous colleauge regarding the client’s needs. We assist clients all day through, by getting them up in the morning, assist them during washings and dressings and if need be assisting them during feeding. I also assist them with the medication at the agreed level of support and as instructed in their Medication Care Needs Assesment.

During the day, clients carry out crafts to spend their time learning new things and twice weekly, we do our best to take them for an outing on trips into the community, while in the afternoon go outside in the garden for activities during summer or inside during winter.

The Care Workers maintain good communication and  develop effective working relationship with clients, actively talking and listening to them about their interests.

We are also responsable for recording and reporting, we maintain detailed accurate records in respect of care and medication support given and tasks undertaken, to protect the confidentiality of all information related to the clients and not divulge information to anyone who is not authorized to receive it, to promptly report to the office any issues concering the care, support, wellbeing or behavior of the client and update records accordingly.

I enjoy my job role since this gives me satisfaction of taking care of the people with special needs, who in return are enjoying their time away from their own home, but still in a home. I have met different people, having different disabilities and I’ve learnt a lot from these past years and gained experience as time goes along.

Parents as Partners

As a parent whose daughter uses the services of Dar il-Kaptan, I find it very important that parents are involved in the decision making progress of the place. The involvement of parents on the Board of Dar il-Kaptan gives us parents the chance to present our views regarding decisions that are going to affect the wellbeing of our children during their stay at

the place. We can help the administration through presenting the needs of our children clearly, thus helping the administrators to see things from the parents point of view. Acting as spokesperson for our children during Board meetings helps us to keep the clients at the centre of the decisions taken, while at the same time it helps us as parents to understand that administering

to the needs of a large number of clients and staff with various needs can have its own problems and we can contribute towards finding the best solutions for all concerned.
