Giving back to our surrounding communities makes us feel good; it helps us be more socially aware as it gives us an altruistic sense of social responsibility and love of people. There’s a proverb that goes “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”
This is a strong belief for the accounting, audit and business advisory firm Baker Tilly Malta who has a long history of giving charity and helping organizations in need. As part of their corporate social responsibility, Baker Tilly Malta has recently donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to Dar Il-Kaptan. This portable, life saving device is able to diagnose the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and on top of that is able to treat them through defibrillation, through the application of electrical therapy the heart is able to re-establish an effective rhythm.
As a non-profit and non-governmental foundation,Dar il-Kaptan is committed to helping people with disabilities and their families by offering their respite care services to the Maltese community. The foundation runs on the principle that the individual had their own right to dignity, respect and privacy. Acknowledging that families require adequate support and the necessary respite so that people with disabilities can remain in their family home and continue to live in the community and lead a life outside institutionalization, Dar il-Kaptan has continued to assist the community byproviding a number of families with services that run on the mentality of enhancing each individual’s potential and enriches their quality of life. It was thanks to these morals and values that Dar il-Kaptan received the European Citizen’s Prize.
